Experience Gold Coast Partners with Basketball Queensland to Host CBSQ Major Tournaments Through 2026

Basketball Queensland has announced a new two-year partnership with Experience Gold Coast to host the Champion Basketball School of Queensland (CBSQ) Major Tournaments in 2025 and 2026 at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.
The CBSQ series – which includes CBSQ Open (Years 11–12), CBSQ Junior Secondary (Years 9–10), and CBSQ Sophomore (Years 7–8) – is the largest and most prestigious school basketball competition in Queensland.
Participation has skyrocketed in recent years, with the tournament growing from 311 teams in 2020 to 649 team nominations in 2024. More than 3,500 student-athletes from across Queensland take part annually, with winning teams earning the opportunity to compete at the Australian School Championships each December – also hosted on the Gold Coast.
The event has been a launchpad for some of Queensland’s brightest young basketball talent, including 2025 NBA Draft 45th pick Rocco Zikarsky (Brisbane Grammar School) and 2025 FIBA Under-19 World Cup representative Prasayus Notoa (Brisbane State High School).
Basketball Queensland CEO Joshua Pascoe said the partnership with Experience Gold Coast will enhance the experience for schools, athletes, and supporters.
“We’re thrilled to partner with Experience Gold Coast and lock in Coomera Indoor Sports Centre as home for our CBSQ Major Tournaments over the next two years. With high-quality facilities, a proud sporting legacy, and a supportive events network, the Gold Coast provides an incredible experience for our schools, athletes, and supporters,” Pascoe said.
Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate highlighted the significance of continuing to utilise world-class venues built for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
“Seeing the CBSQ tournament on court at Coomera underscores the power of our post-Commonwealth Games legacy."
"Seven years on from GC2018, our city’s games venues now host the best sporting carnivals on offer and this school-based basketball tournament is no exception. I urge basketball fans to make a date with Coomera Sports Precinct in October and catch the amazing talent of 3,500 competitors in Queensland’s largest and most prestigious school competition,” Mayor Tate said.
The Coomera Indoor Sports Centre remains one of Queensland’s premier basketball venues thanks to its size, quality, and ability to host large-scale events. In addition to the CBSQ tournaments, the Gold Coast will also welcome the Australian Boomers for a fixture in July 2025, further cementing the region’s reputation as a basketball hub.
