Player and Coach Development: Townsville

Player and Coach Development: Townsville

Over the weekend, the Basketball Queensland (BQ) Player and Coach Development team visited Townsville to deliver a few development activities in the region.

Friday 15th of September

Luke McGuire and Patrick McInerney arrived in Townsville on Friday and delivered an in-person ASPIRE Regional workshop for the ten local coaches in the program. Luke began the session by presenting on scouting and incorporated methods used from his NBL1 and State Team experiences. James Rapinett, Townsville’s Player and Coach Development Manager, presented on pick-and-roll offense and shared his knowledge on how to develop good pick-and-roll players. Finally, Pat presented useful disruptive defensive tactics as well as both man-to-man half-court and full-court concepts.

Saturday 16th of September

On Saturday, the team delivered a Coaches Conference for Townsville Basketball. This session, delivered by Luke and Pat, featured a coach leadership discussion while also incorporating BQ Style of Play concepts such as transition offense, half-court offense, defensive rotations and more. The session shared valuable coaching points and techniques, which can be translated to all stages of the coaching pathway from club to representatives and beyond.

After this session, the team headed to Burdekin Basketball and ran a player development session for their Under 14 and 16 athletes. With 30 athletes in attendance, the session was focused on full-court defense and how to force pressure situations for the opposition, while incorporating BQ training habits. The athletes at this session were extremely engaged and it was valuable for BQ to travel to service these athletes.

Sunday 17th of September

To finish the weekend in North Queensland, BQ held the first Under 12 Next Gen Camp in Townsville. The Next Gen Program is designed to give young athletes their first taste of the BQ training style as well as concepts. This session featured drills and games which encouraged athletes to compete on the court, learn 1-on-1 skills and ultimately improve some of their training habits.

This weekend was a great opportunity for our BQ Player and Coach Development team to visit and work with our regional athletes and coaches and make sure they are provided with the tools to continue to grow the game in North Queensland.
