Female Aspire Coaches Gain Elite Insights at WNBL Townsville Tip Off

Ten coaches from Basketball Queensland's Female Aspire program spent the recent WNBL Townsville Tip Off weekend learning from inside some of the country's top women's basketball environments.
The weekend was built around the theme of "Owning Their Coaching Journey." Coaches Cassie Dover, Alex Brady, Jordy Brady, Heidi Freeburn, Kathleen MacLeod, Ashleigh Karaitiana, Colleen Kaesler, Aleisha Catip, Lou Webb and Rachael McCully reflected on and shared their journeys so far, along with their aspirations for the future.
The group heard from Townsville Fire Assistant Coach Miles Bench and Tasmania Jewels Assistant Coach Zoe Mesmen, and observed each team's practice sessions.
On Saturday, each coach was assigned to a team for game day. They sat in on pre-game meetings and half-time, and watched from behind the bench to see coaching behaviours, communication, and in-game strategies and adjustments up close. The weekend wrapped up with a sport psychology session led by Dr Jo Lukins.
The mix of sessions was designed to give the coaches practical tools, inspiration and a supportive community to draw on as they continue to develop.
The residential is part of the wider Female Aspire program, which also includes online workshops and group learning opportunities. Coaches Aneka Davis, Kate Steiner and Shelley Burston are also part of the program but were unable to attend the residential.
Basketball Queensland would like to thank the Geelong Venom, UC Capitals, Tasmania Jewels, Townsville Fire and Sydney Flames for opening their environments to our coaches and helping make the weekend possible.
