Leadership Transition at BQ: Fiona Allen Takes Over as Julie George Steps Down
Basketball Queensland (BQ), Board Chairperson Julie George has decided not to seek reappointment. After a distinguished tenure, Julie George will step down as Chairperson, allowing Deputy Chair Fiona Allen to transition into the leadership role.
Julie will remain a Director on the BQ Board alongside the five current serving members and will also take up the position of Chair of BQ’s Nominations Committee.
"I have enjoyed working closely with the other directors to provide sound governance and oversight to BQ. While supporting our CEO, and our strategic goals we have realised continuous growth for basketball in Queensland year on year," said Julie George.
Julie believes that Fiona Allen is ready to lead BQ moving into the future.
"With an understanding of the sport, where BQ is positioned at the moment, and the requirements of the Chair role, Fiona will seamlessly continue to lead excellent Board governance and oversight as Chair," said Julie George.
After serving as Deputy Chair for the last two and half years, Fiona Allen steps into the position with extensive experience and a deep understanding of the company's strategic direction.
"Julie and other Chairs before her have left a legacy of responsible and prudent governance, where BQ's associations, and the sport more broadly, are front and centre of what we do. I aim to continue this impressive legacy."
Recognising the current challenges to our members, Fiona is strongly focused on facility development as we continue the sports growth to Brisbane 2032.
"Given the importance of facilities to BQ's associations, as well as reaching BQ's strategic 'growth' objective, facilities will continue to be a focus," said Fiona Allen.
Effective from 18th June 2024, recently re-appointed Director Claudia Brassard will fill the position of Deputy Chair to support Fiona Allen and the Board of Directors moving forward.
"Fiona is known for her balanced decision-making, which ensures that every perspective is considered. With her deep understanding of the sports community and commitment to equity and growth, Fiona is perfectly positioned to lead Basketball Queensland into a thriving future," said Claudia Brassard.
The board, employees, and stakeholders thank Julie for her exemplary service and dedication and express full support and confidence in Fiona and Claudia as she embarks on this new leadership journey.
