TAFE Queensland Launch Basketball Queensland TAFE at School Program

In an exciting collaboration aimed at the next generation of the basketball industry work force, Basketball Queensland and TAFE Queensland have joined forces to introduce the Basketball Queensland TAFE at School Program.

This innovative program aims to empower senior high school basketball enthusiasts, offering them the necessary tools to excel both on and off the court, while paving the way for a rewarding career in the sports industry.

Under the program, students in year 10 or 11 will have the opportunity to study a Certificate II and III in Sport Coaching with a specialisation in basketball. The curriculum has been thoughtfully designed to combine theoretical knowledge with practical training, providing a comprehensive understanding of coaching techniques, sports management, and basketball-specific skills. This unique program ensures that participants receive a holistic education, equipping them with the skills needed to pursue success within the sporting arena.

The 2-year Basketball Queensland TAFE at School Program, is designed for students commencing year 10 or 11, who will attend the program one day a week at either Logan Metro Sports and Event Centre or South Pines Sports Complex in Brendale during the school year. This flexible arrangement allows participants to balance their academic schooling commitments while dedicating time to their basketball education and development. By immersing themselves in a basketball centric and engaging learning environment, students will gain the necessary expertise to thrive in the sports industry. Upon successful completion of the program, participants can earn up to 8 Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) credits and contribute to their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

“This program is the first of its kind for our sport in Queensland and will allow us to play a significant role in preparing and developing the next generation of basketball coaches and administrators. The future of basketball is bright in Queensland, with more than 70% growth in active participants over the last three years. We believe this partnership will allow the infrastructure that supports our game to build towards the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Chris Angus, Operations Manager at Basketball Queensland.

"We are thrilled to partner with Basketball Queensland to launch the Basketball Queensland TAFE at School Program. Through this collaboration, we aim to equip students with the necessary skills and qualifications to excel in the sports industry and support the next generation workforce of one of Queensland’s largest and fastest growing sports," stated Jesse O’Hara from TAFE Queensland.

Applications for the Basketball Queensland TAFE at School Program are set to open on July 17, 2023, with the program scheduled to commence in term 1 of 2024. Prospective students in year 10 or 11 are encouraged to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to pursue their passion for basketball while gaining valuable qualifications and setting themselves on a path to success in the sports industry.
